Very exciting day here at Ullswater Ceramics. I have placed an order for a kiln with the lovely folks at Northern Kilns. It’s slightly terrifying (how would you feel about what’s effectively a giant oven that heats up to 1280 deg C in your house?) but it’s also a rather essential piece of kit. It will be a few months until it arrives, but very excited none the less.
The biggest decision has been judging the size to order – hence drawing giant circles and trying to visualise how big the interior of the kiln will be to see how many pots it will hold – see above! Too small will mean a lot of firings (time consuming and expensive) but too big and it will be more cost effective to run, but even more expensive upfront and take a lot of work to fill. My final decision has been a combination of guess work and personal comfort – somehow a kiln rated at 32A – which is not that dissimilar to a domestic oven – felt like something I could live with. Fingers crossed.
