I’m often asked to explain what they are (so don’t worry if you didn’t know) but yarn bowls are great for holding your wool (yarn) while knitting. They stop balls of wall rolling off or getting tangled up and help to keep a constant tension while knitting. They are also an attractive way to store knitting projects when you are not actually knitting.

I love making yarn bowls as there’s something very satisfying about throwing something and then modifying it. It’s also one of the few ways you can test the quality of your throwing without destroying the pot. I’ve just dried out a small batch of yarn bowls and will be taking these off for their first bisque firing very soon. The latest batch should be medium sized bowls, approximately 15cm or 6 inches across when fired. (If they look bigger now, it’s because they will shink on firing.) I’m currently planning to glaze this in green and white, but if you would like to place a pre-order before 23 September, then I’m up for discussing other colour-ways with you. When finished, these will be available to order direct from me, and in Mary’s studio gallery at Brougham Hall.

I also do smaller yarn bowls – and I’ve done some really huge ones up to 25cm (10 inches) in the past.

All yarn bowls start as a bowl, thrown on the wheel and with a nice sturdy base

When leather hard, it’s time to cut out the j shape through which the wool will run

Next I add holes which can be used to store needles, or for threading multiple skeins of wool through – and then I smooth and smooth and smooth all those edges so the yarn runs nicely.

Yarn bowls in progress

Are you a knitter, or do you have a knitter in your family – if so, do you or they have a yarn bowl?
